The Brigham and Women's General Medicine Fellowship site is located at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) Division of General Medicine and Primary Care within walking distance of the Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. BWH is closely affiliated with the Harvard Medical School Department of Health Care Policy and the Harvard School of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management, therefore BWH faculty are based at each of the three locations described below.

The Division of General Medicine and Primary Care conducts health services research focused on quality of care and access to care and clinical epidemiologic studies of common medical conditions. The Division has been funded as one of three Centers of Excellence in Patient Safety nationally by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and faculty members are local and national leaders in the use of clinical information systems to improve the quality and safety of care.

The Department of Health Care Policy was founded in 1989 to improve public policy regarding health care financing and delivery, and to help incorporate recent advances in medical science into better patient care. The Department's research agenda includes the following areas: mental health and substance abuse; measures and reports of quality of care; health economics; aging and end-of-life care; children's health; access to health care; and disease-specific health services research on cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions. Several BWH general medicine faculty have joint appointments in the HMS Department of Health Care Policy.

Research priorities in the Department of Health Policy and Management include health financing and insurance, evaluation and management of medical technology including meta-analyses of clinical trials and the cost-effectiveness of health programs in developing countries, quality of health care and health care reform. Several BWH general medicine faculty have joint appointments in the HSPH Department of Health Policy and Management.

A few examples from recent Fellows' research include:
  • Relation of diabetes-specific knowledge to self-care activities, ambulatory care processes, and metabolic outcomes in adults with diabetes
  • The impact of performance measurement on vaccination rates and pneumonia admissions in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System
  • Impact of perceived discrimination on use of preventive services
  • Risk factors for outpatient adverse drug events
  • The impact of an electronic clinical reminder system on quality of care
  • Medicare first dollar coverage of ACE-inhibitors for beneficiaries with diabetes saves money and lives
  • Ambulatory management of hypercholesterolemia in patients with athersclerosis: differences by sex and race
  • Identification of individuals at high-risk for inherited colon or breast cancer syndromes in primary care: implications of an inadequate family history assessment for early screening and genetic testing
  • The predictive accuracy of the New York coronary bypass report card and its impact on volume and surgical practice
  • Trends in use of major procedures among black and white elderly: is the gap narrowing?
